September Newsletter

A lot is going on in our DP community. Deliberate practice has caught the attention of an increasing number of clinicians, clinics and faculties. In many corners of the world, our colleagues are developing and sharing resources and training experiences, to facilitate what is our common aim: Improving training to the benefit of our clients. The goal of the IDPS is to nurture this network and facilitate its activities. You are an important part of that, which is why we would like to keep you in the loop by sending you this newsletter.

Network

The IDPS now has members in 18 countries (🤩) on four continents! We have a lot of international interaction, sharing of resources, and training together in practice meetups etc. In Germany, a group is about to start translating the open source training aids the IDPS provides to German. Basic resources have been translated into numerous languages already. want to do the same in your country? Can’t see your star on the map? let us know!

Sentio - a Deliberate Practice university!

Sentio University is a university founded on the fundamentals of deliberate practice. at sentio.org you will find open-source learning material including DP exercises and videos. Sentio opened their telehealth clinic Sentio Counseling Center last spring, and their first training cohort of graduate students and associates will start in September. Students will be provided with a comprehensive, year-long training program created by Drs. Tony Rousmaniere and Alex Vaz. Sentio is committed to measuring outcomes every step of the way. This will provide data on the effectiveness of training methods and clinical services. Congratulations to Sentio University and its fortunate students!

Upcoming workshops

11.00 Eastern Standard Time,  17.00 Central European Time.

In this meet-up, we will practice Empathic Affirmation and Validation.  This is one of the basic skills in Emotion Focused Therapy and at the same time one of the most important skills in all therapy models. At the practice meet up we will focus on evocative moments where validation is necessary but often challenging. register here!

At conferences

A range of therapeutic communities are incorporating DP presentations in their programs. In April 2022, the Swedish DP coach Elisabet Rosén presented skill-building for therapists at the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration´s (SEPI) international online conference. In September 2022, Anna-Majia Kokko (Finland) and Dan Sacks (Israel), both psychologists and certified DP coaches presented deliberate practice at the European Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies in Barcelona, Spain. In October 2022, Vidar M. Husby, Elisabet Rosén and Luca Rossi will lead a presentation and a pre-conference workshop at the International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association´s conference in Venice, Italy. This reflects the growing interest in deliberate practice, not to mention its applicability across psychotherapy models. Make sure to let us know if you are reaching out in your own community!

The German psychologist Arndt Linsenhoff is publishing his article on DP in the German journal Psychoterapeutenjournal these days. The PDF will be available on the IDPS website when published. In this article, he introduces the reader to DP, present applications, and emphasizes that DP has aspects that may be emotionally evocative and therefore has to be dealt with in a caring, subtle manner.
