Deliberate Practice Certification Programs

It is hard to consistently do effective practice that reliably predicts professional development without a deeper understanding to DP principles, research, and their real-life applications. To do this, trainees and supervisors benefit from “learning about learning”, revisiting assumptions about what it means to do effective therapy skills training, and experiencing the distinctive benefits of DP first-hand.

The International Deliberate Practice Society Certification Criteria, described below, provide the tools and first-hand experiences to implement effective psychotherapy DP training for yourself and others. Certification is provided by IDPS Certified Supervisors, who have ample experience in DP implementation, research and consultation at various settings.

The main goals of the Certification Programs are to:

  • Ensure quality of implemented Deliberate Practice methods.

  • Promote flexible uniformity across Certified DP Therapists and Supervisors.

  • Maintain the integrity of core DP principles in different training and supervision contexts.

  • Facilitate rigorous studies of DP effects on therapist’s skills and outcomes.

Levels of Deliberate Practice Certification

  • DP Therapist Certification

Professionals at this level are certified for effective use of psychotherapy deliberate practice methods, and are eligible to apply for the “DP Supervision Certification”. They are not qualified to offer DP supervision to others, or rate DP sessions.

  • DP Supervision Certification

Professionals at this level are certified to Supervise trainees with DP methods and to apply to create/run a Certified DP Training Site.

  • Certified DP Site

Certifies a training site (e.g. university course, agency, clinic and other training sites) as an official DP-sponsored site. This certification guarantees that high-quality DP methods are provided by certified Supervisors within this setting, and that these methods are effectively integrated within the context of the training’s curriculum and activities.

What does certification consist of?

Certifications are divided into a didactic and an experiential component. Didactic hours provide the necessary theoretical framework to implement DP methods successfully. Experiential work, provided through supervision consultations with a Certified DP Supervisor, provides necessary opportunities to experience and receive expert Supervision on DP methods first-hand. To attain certification, you will also need to complete a set of DP Forms, pass evaluations of DP session recordings and Supervisor-rated DP competency scales.

The table below summarizes training requirements for the two main levels of DP Certification.

Further information for each of these requirements can be found on the IDPS Certification Requirements Form (note that the number of sessions for therapist certification has changed from 12 to 8). Applicants can document their certification progress and submit for final granting of certification using the DP Certification Application.
